The Costs That Make Up Large Assisted Living Pricing
Hi, I’m Todd Goodman with First Choice Senior Placement. Today I’m focusing on costs of the larger apartment style assisted living communities in the Greater Sacramento area.
- Sacramento County
- Placer County
- Eldorado county
Currently there are 128 larger apartment style assisted living facilities in our area. So that’s really great news. And there’s also two pending right now that should be opened by the end of the year.
So with that in mind, I’d like to ask Kelly if she can elaborate on the average costs, current costs, and how cost is determined for apartment style assisted living.

The 4 Primary Components That Determine the Price of Assisted Living
Oh, my gosh, so much goes into it. In the large assisted livings facilities there are four primary way that they determine what the cost is for the resident.
Apartment Cost
There’s always the cost of the apartment. That’s the number one cost.
Level of Care
Then the second cost is the care costs. Their nurse will determine what the level of care is. In some communities, it’s an a la carte price. In other communities, it’s a level of care price. And then kind of a subset of that, some communities charge for med management, and some it’s included within that care cost or that level of care.
So those are really going to be your two main costs for the monthly price.
Community Fee
But don’t forget, each large community has a community fee.
Annual Cost of Living Increases
And then they are allowed by the state to increase the cost of the apartment each year, and most of them do. So basically a cost of living increase.
Average Cost of Large Assisted Living in the Sacramento Area
On average, in early 2021, the cost would be right around in the $5,000 range. I mean, I would say probably for the average person, in a good community, with the average care costs you’re looking at $5200.
